The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) has welcomed the Welsh Government’s announcement of an additional £20 million for schools in 2024-25.
This funding will be allocated through the School Standards Grant and will provide targeted support to schools facing particular challenges, including those in special measures.
Schools across Wales have been managing increasing financial pressures and local authorities have been working closely with schools to mitigate these challenges.
Councillor Lis Burnett, WLGA spokesperson for Education, said:
"This additional funding for schools is a welcome step, and it is encouraging to see Welsh Government responding to the concerns that councils and schools have raised.
“Schools continue to face financial pressures, particularly in areas such as Additional Learning Needs, staffing costs, and wider education provision. With adequate, sustainable funding, councils and schools can continue to meet their statutory duties, provide high-quality education, and support learners to reach their full potential.
“Long-term financial certainty is critical to delivering high standards of education, and we urge Welsh Government to continue working closely with councils to provide sustainable funding that allows schools to plan ahead with confidence.
“The WLGA is keen to continue working in partnership with Welsh Government and councils throughout Wales to ensure that this additional money makes a real difference to pupils, staff, and communities across Wales."
