Our Goal

National education standards delivered at a local level

Lifelong Learning

"Improved education standards are best achieved by councils free to shape their response at a local level"

Local government is delivering for learners in Wales by setting the highest possible standards for the education system that supports them.

Aimed at raising standards, improving outcomes and breaking the link between poverty and attainment, our approach is based on a positive partnership between councils and the Welsh Government.

Progress is being made. Performance at GCSE and A level are at a record high, improvement is gaining momentum and overall educational standards are on an upwards trajectory.

From 21st Century Schools and new ways of regional working, to supporting the delivery of youth services, our councils continue to operate at the forefront of educational improvement in Wales.

We believe our councils must now be empowered to deliver Wales’ ambitions for constant improvement by setting budgets and priorities at a local level.

Pre-16 education must remain within local government, receive the funding it deserves and be shaped by councils who are directly accountable to their local communities.

In partnership with a wide range of organisations like the Association of the Directors of Education in Wales (ADEW), we aim to influence national education policy and continue to improve outcomes for learners in Wales.
