The WLGA has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer to seek clarity on which council-run services will qualify for energy bill support after March 2023.
Councillor Rob Stewart (Swansea), WLGA Deputy Leader said:
“Whilst we welcome that support for public sector organisations will be included in the recently announced Energy Bills Discount Scheme, we need assurances that all council services will be eligible for help under the terms of the scheme.
“In addition to frontline services such as schools and social care settings, valuable community assets such as street lighting, libraries, swimming pools and leisure centres also make a huge contribution to the wellbeing of our communities. But unsustainable and spiralling energy costs are placing them in huge peril.
“Due to efficiency measures already taken by councils, we are not in a position to cut down energy costs any further. For the sake of our residents’ and communities’ wellbeing, it is vital that these essential energy requirements are met to ensure the viability of these services.”
