Local Government Comes Together for Youth Homelessness Prevention Conference

Friday, 01 December 2023

On Thursday 30 November, the WLGA supported and contributed to the planning and co-ordination of the second Youth Homelessness Prevention Conference in Llandrindod Wells in conjunction with End Youth Homelessness Cymru.

The conference saw delegates from across local government services, such as education, housing, and social services as well as the voluntary sector come together to discuss a number of important related topics including the Welsh Government’s new guidance for the early identification of young people at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) and the role of Youth Work in the current Welsh Government consultation on ending homelessness in Wales.

Cllr Andrea Lewis, WLGA Spokesperson for Housing said:

“I’m delighted that the WLGA has been able to support this event. The conference was a big success and provided a valuable platform for local government and partners to engage in meaningful discussions on pressing housing issues.

“The number of individuals seeking housing assistance from local councils and the unprecedented numbers in emergency temporary accommodation underscore the urgent housing challenges our communities face.

“Despite prevailing financial constraints, which the UK Government’s recent Autumn Statement did little to address, we welcome the Welsh Government prioritizing the fight against homelessness.

“The WLGA remains committed to working collaboratively with Government to ensure that adequate support and solutions are in place to tackle the housing and homelessness challenges facing our communities.”
