WLGA announces Pathways to Planning pilot in Wales

Friday, 23 August 2024

The Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) is running a pilot of the Pathways to Planning programme, an initiative to enhance planning services across Wales. In collaboration with the Local Government Association (LGA), this pilot seeks to address workforce shortages in Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) by offering recent graduates valuable experience and qualifications.

Four graduates have secured placements with planning teams in Newport, Carmarthenshire, Conwy, and Caerphilly. These graduates will gain hands-on experience while studying for an RTPI-accredited Master’s degree, with funding for their studies being provided as part of the pilot.

Councillor Rob Stewart, WLGA Planning Spokesperson, expressed his support, stating: "This pilot is crucial for developing the skilled workforce needed to meet the challenges facing our communities. By investing in the next generation of planners, we are helping ensure that local authorities are equipped to tackle priorities such as housing, economic development, and climate resilience."

The LGA will be recruiting the next cohort for the Pathways scheme in October, if suitable funding can be secured in Wales, LPAs could have an opportunity to increase capacity within their planning teams.
